Teledyne Technologies Announces a $7.9 Million Environmental Solutions Contract
LOS ANGELES - Feb. 25, 2000 - Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE: TDY) announced today that the U.S. Army has awarded a $7.9 million contract to Teledyne-Commodore, LLC, to test Teledyne-Commodore's technology for the destruction of chemical weapons.
The demonstration, administered under the Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment program (ACWA), will begin this month and continue until January 2001. The tests will take place at the Army's Dugway Proving Ground and the Chemical Agent Munitions Disposal System (CAMDS), both in Utah.
Teledyne-Commodore's technology includes the patented Solvated Electron Technology, or SET™, and a proprietary ammonia fluid-jet munitions access and washout system. The SET™ process is designed to convert toxic chemicals into environmentally safe salts without the need for incineration.
"This is a major step toward proving that our SET™ process will provide a technical and cost-effective alternative to incineration," said Dr. Robert Mehrabian, president and chief executive officer of Teledyne Technologies.
Previous tests of SET™ technology in government-approved surety laboratories neutralized all hazardous components of the assembled chemical weapons, including chemical agents, propellants and explosives, to a level greater than the Army's requirement of 99.9999 percent destruction. A test using an integrated SET™ pilot plant held at the Army's Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., confirmed the effectiveness of the SET™ process by demilitarizing chemical training rockets, containing propellant, chemical agent stimulant, and energetic materials.
